Dec 20, 2012 - continued

Another hybrid I particularly liked is 05-GI-1. Its only problem is it's white (smile, "whites are easy"). I quite liked it's blue accents and the way the orangish flush on it's fall blade fades away leaving bright white. The "problem" is simply that I already have a number of whites that I like. Two other nice whites from this year were 03-FO-2 and 06-C-2.

At this year's Lentetuin my hybrid 98-NP-4 (white with navy markings) was awarded 'Primeur Lentetuin 2012.' Wim and Mark have a modest stock of it at the moment, so it won't take too many more years before sales can begin.

I was quite impressed to see how well Spot On is doing in the field in Holland. The process of building up stock to the point of having enough for sales is a long one -- in this case 15 years so far! But we are getting close.

'Reticulata Iris - The Journey Continues' will appear in the January issue of the American Iris Society Bulletin. See 'Articles' below.

Garden Import here in Toronto sold 3 of my hybrids for the first time in 2012. Sales were quite good. I have been building up some small stocks at a farm 2 hours south-west of Toronto for the past 3 years. My main goal to propagate some of my newest cultivars for hybridizing. It will be interesting to see what varieties I have available for sales next year.

I need to redesign this web site. It's grown considerably in recent years with the additional features that have been continually tacked on. The dilemma is to figure out the best way to do that -- to simplify things and easily allow one to get at all the features.

The catch is two fold 1) I haven't come up with a good solution, and 2) I really don't have time to implement a solution right now. So in the interim I have made a number of improvements, as well as added a separate page of highlights, and a gallery showing photos from the Lentetuin and Keukenhof.

One of my goals for 2013 is to find additional growers for my hybrids. Wim and Mark de Goede will be introducing several, but they are not all that interested in ones from Iris danfordiae. They don't like the fact they don't have proper standards; typically the standards are reduced to just a hair. They also feel the flowers are a bit too small. The smile is they are about the same size as the commercial troiploid form of Iris danfordiae.
